Portland, OR – The Oregon Liquor Control Commission and the Oregon Department of Transportation have created a video to help servers and bartenders better recognize the signs of alcohol impairment.
The four-minute video follows four volunteers who participated in a wet laboratory (wet lab) last February. A wet lab is a controlled environment that allows for hands-on research of the effects of alcohol. In this particular wet lab, the participants consumed alcohol under direct supervision of Department of Public Safety Standards and Training and local police. All four participants began with blood alcohol content (BAC) levels of 0.00. This video follows the volunteers as each one ends with a BAC of .08 or higher. The legal driving limit is .08.
There are many subtle changes that take effect when a person consumes alcohol. This video is aimed at raising awareness of those subtle indicators so that servers can intervene before a customer drives home impaired or reaches a visible level of intoxication.
“Servers are on the front line to help protect customers and the community,” said Rudy Williams, Deputy Director of the Public Safety Services Program. "Of course it’s easy to recognize someone is drunk when they stumble around, act obnoxiously or fall off of a bar stool. By knowing how to recognize these signs of impairment, servers can help prevent alcohol-related tragedies.”
The video not only serves as an additional learning tool for servers, but also something that can be used by schools, communities, parents and the public. “Because the participants are all over the legal driving limit and showing little signs of visible intoxication, the DVD can easily lend itself to a broader discussion on impairment - making it a good tool for many audiences,” says Williams.
